Is Spain being a little hypocritical?

This morning in my morning reading, I perused an article about Spain launching a legal bid for claim on the recent massive shipwreck booty found. The company, called Odyssey, is the first of its kind: a publicly traded treasure seeking outfit. What they are doing sounds much like the Dirk Pitt treasure finds from the fun series by Clive Cussler.
Spain claims that if the ship is Spanish in origin, they should be entitled to the treasure. I am no history expert, but didn’t Spain get most of their gold by pillaging other countries, particularly in Central and South America? I understand there is some legal precedent to at least having a partial claim, but come on. Would you have found it without this company? If you want it so bad, go out and find it yourself. Finders keepers I say!
Perhaps we should be tracing the ship back to its historical origins and finding where the gold and silver were stolen from, then see what ancestors deserve the proceeds. I seriously doubt they would want to do that…history can be an ugly thing to open up.

I love a good Pirate tale! Arrrh…
Quote: “Odyssey said Monday that its recovery conformed with salvage laws, the site was beyond the territorial waters or legal jurisdiction of any country and the coins were legally exported to the United States.”
Finders keepers…
