You can actually look back and pinpoint where all of this started. So called "Dr." Spook(?) actually taught parents to teach the art of excuses to their children.
You sir have said what a lot of us out here have thought for a long time. Are we and our children teaching our young to take responsibilty? It seems that there are tons of people that feel like we do, but why isn't it changing?
Step up parents! Teach your youngsters responsibility! Of course it takes time with your kids, and it takes setting an example. Just put it back on them. Ask them what they would do if it was turned around. Of course they have to be a little older. but it works.

Mr. I could not agree with you more. That is the first thing I was informed and accepted as I was growing up and in my Motorcycle Safety Foundations class. Great post and keep up the good work.

You have articulated what I have been thinking while I have been teaching in the UAE for the past three years. I am leaving at the end of this school year and I was thinking about what I would most want to impart the Year 7-12 children I teach. So Google Search 'take responsibilty for your own actions' brings me to your blog. I would like to share your words with my department. In the UAE all schools require parents to pay for their child’s British education. It is a tax free country so education is not an entitlement as in the UK. However parents at my school use their fee paying stasis to bring teachers to task. Schools may not stand up to parents due to the current economic climate. Hence as teachers we face ridiculous complaints supporting their children’s actions. Lateness - bad traffic (there is always bad traffic in the UAE = get up earlier), Blame it on the Teacher - my son/daughter is not being taught in their learning style (learn now that the world will not change for you = adapt to your environment), Missed work - I don't understand the last unit because I was on holiday during school term (if you are not in school the examiner doesn't care - it will be in the exam!). I could carry on but in need to be in bed for my 7.30 am start.

This is an excellent read. It’s very true that more people should be taking ownership of their own actions and a lot of other things would work themselves out. I read in another blog recently, on Ronn Torossian’s, CEO of 5WPR advocates that “no matter what has happened, or who is to blame, or how it all came to be, choose to take full responsibility for your life.” The message here is that when you do this, things will begin starting to get better for you.

great post. I am an educator and am writing a children's book about responsibility, titled "It Was Like Everyone Just Gave Up". Being a mom and working with 7-10 year olds I am seeing a lot of lost kids whom have not learned to be accountable and patient. The immediacy of rewards and praise through media and homelife are not doing our children any favors.

I got a lot out of this. Im hoping that by understanding accepting responsibility I might be able to be more in control of my life instead of feeling like Im a victim and there is nothing I can do about my life even though I desperately want to change it. Thanks
