Trying to get a part-time job is worse than….

Trying to get a part-time job is worse than….going to the dentist! This is a recent happening in my life. I’ve been fortunate enough to be a Stay-at-home mom since my daughter was born almost 4 years ago. This past Christmas season, I thought it would be a good idea to get a part-time job a few evenings a week.
Well, let me tell you, what I thought would be relatively easy, turned out to be impossible. A Wal-Mart sprouted itself just a mile from my home, so I thought that was the perfect opportunity. I have a few years of retail and customer service experience, and was not opposed to stocking shelves. I just wanted something part-time.
The application on the computer in the store took well over an hour, and i “passed” the assessment. I thought I’d get a call in a few days. Nope. Nada…zip. Not even an acknowledgement of my application. Hmmm. Was I too young? Too old? Too something, I guess. I can’t quite figure it out.
So now, as I pass through the front doors, I am greeted by someone, who somehow passed a test I didn’t know existed. It’s an odd feeling, and sometimes I don’t like it. I still shop there, but there are times, I just don’t want to go in those doors. I guess they know something I don’t

I feel your pain. The job market can be a difficult animal to tame. I have spent my entire career as an independent entrepreneur or partnered with others of like minds. Because of that, the have ridden the financial and employment roller coaster much of that time. Much like a true to life roller coaster, it has been a fun ride much of the time, but some of those tight & fast corners had much stomach in a lurch, if you get my comparison. It seems whenever I have needed a job, none are to be found; but, when I am gainfully employed the offers seem abundant. Murphy once again at work.
That sounded so like me when I was Job hunting!
I too, have retail experience(6 years) and I filled in a (complicated) Tesco form cos it was “computerised” and you had to check the boxes, as opposed to filling in a “written application”.
apparently you had to get so many boxes “lined up” to even get an interview!!!!!
I know my barcodes frome my shelf barkers, so I felt that it was they that had lost out!!!!
As Jeremy says, once you get a job, thats when the offers start coming!!!!!
What you should do is to call the employer who you submitted an application to and demand an interview for the position. if you do a follow up call chances are you will get a response or the alternative is to turn the application over to a higher authority(IE Store manager, Floor supervisor) and talk to the above mentioned individuals.
