How Stupid Do You Have to Be?
Feb 1st, 2007 by Jeremy
During my morning online reading ritual I came across what I thought fell under the classification of “stupid news.” Most sites call it “offbeat” or something of that nature, but in this case it just came under the health warning over at CNN. Yes, I know many posts ago I swore off CNN, but even with their bias they still provide some of the best news coverage online. They are back in my reading, but I am much more selective and skip the obviously politically biased headlines. I don’t need the extra blood pressure raise this early in the morning.
Anyway, back to what I wanted to mention today. The article in question was titled “U.S. doctors warn of poisoning from hand gels” and was reporting a warning being issued due to cases of individuals drinking sanitizing hand gels to get a buzz because of the alcoholic content. Shouldn’t that title be something more along the line of “Natural selection still at work” or “Look what these idiots are doing”? If you are so hard up to get a buzz that you are downing a product that has who knows what other chemicals in it simply because it has the magic “alcohol” appearing in the list, you have a serious problem coupled with some serious stupidity. Not knowing the difference from isopropyl alcohol on a chemical level I can understand, but I think the common person knows that it is not the kind to throw down the gullet.
Don’t get me wrong, I am sensitive to the nature of addictions and how they can take common sense and throw it a mile out the window, but you can’t pull that card in this case. This is just plain stupid is what stupid does. Isopropyl alcohol will give your system a change from the normal…it will just stop your heart and nervous system. Like I said, natural selection at work attempting to remove just a little stupidity from the gene pool.

Jeremy (and cnn,
Thank you so much for warning me about the dangers of drinking hand sanitizer to get a buzz. I would have never guessed that it could be harmful just by the way it smelled. lol. Natural selection is right!
All lightheartedness aside…the news I heard on this was upsetting as small children ( a 2 year old was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning)and that pre-school/day care aged kids that are routinely given a squirt of hand sanitizer after play/bathroom time were congesting this….some schools are stopping this practice of the usage. Seems some small children were fascinated by the scent or consistency and put it into their mouths. I think more so than natural selection God gave a shout out so the small children could be saved…made everyone take notice.
