New Year’s Resolutions
Jan 2nd, 2007 by What's Gotta Go
Yep, its the New Year and you can already tell how much time and effort I spent on my resolutions because I didn’t post on the very first day of the year. Actually, I was busy with plenty of other things, so WGG didn’t get any TLC. I am not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions. They are all well and good, but the reality is they typically just don’t happen, so why bother? Every year we are well intentioned, but just because we think up and maybe even write down some things we wish we would do, that doesn’t get our lazy nether regions off the couch and in action.
I have plenty of things I wish I was doing better. What is the number one resolution every year, without fail…three guesses and the first two don’t count. Lose weight and get in shape. I want to be in better shape like everyone else, but make a resolution to do it isn’t going to change my lazy ways. I have been going to the gym again, so I am making my effort. I guess I must have resolved some time ago.
Why is it that the American Way these days seems to be “I’ll do it tomorrow” whenever it comes to doing something good with ourselves. Perhaps it is just easier to be fat lazy people? I am including myself in this. As motivationally minded as I try to be, if I were to let myself the entire weekend and every evening would end up on the couch with some nachos and the remote. Do our minds just crave the complete lack of need to think on a higher level just like our bodies crave fats? I really do enjoy accomplishing things, building things, etc.; but why is it I can so easily find myself putting off the simplest of tasks just for the sake of putting it off.
Why wait until New Year’s to make your resolution? If you were thinking about your resolutions more than a week ago, what was stopping you from starting right then on what you would like to be doing better? Sure, the new year is a handy time to set your goals in motion, but if you wait until when you put a new calendar on the wall to get in gear, that is a sad commentary on your motivational capacity. You want to make a change, go ahead and write it down, break it up into milestones and achievable goals and actually DO IT! That is the secret to actually becoming a better person, losing weight, etc. There, one more thing you actually learned here at WGG.
I admit I am a person that likes to “kick off” a new plan of action. I typically wait for Monday to roll around to recommit to the gym or similar type of failure I am trying to correct. The new year isn’t a bad time to commit to be a better person, I just hate that we all fall into the trap of believing that this year is going to be different. Guess what, it isn’t going to be different unless you actually do something different. If you can do that for more than 30 days, then you may have a chance of achieving your goal(s), and more power to you.
So, prove me wrong. Actually make a resolution you can achieve with reachable goals. If you fail one week, don’t just give up on it entirely, get back on the path and adjust your goals so you are once again motivated and doing the steps necessary to succeed. Don’t give in to the rational-lies that you can think of so easily when the going gets tough. Now wouldn’t that be a change for the better.
Most of all, when you don’t achieve all that you hoped by Feb. 1, don’t wait until next year to resolve to be a better person. That’s my resolution. We could use a lot more of those people around here these days!

I’m right there with you on this one. I am trying to improve my health, so I have been working on eating healthier and exercising for some time now.
When I falter, I just remember that tomorrow is a new day and get back up and on my way.
I think New Year’s Resolutions are just a way to set yourself up for failure. My new goal will be started on Weds, Jan 3rd. Wednesday is my “day” of the week.
