I think you hit the nail on the head here. With the advent of "screen names" people hide behind these identities and blast away what ever thought is going through their mind at the time.

For some reason, I use my "real" first name. Partly because it is not a common name, it is easy for me to remember when signing in on a site, but mostly because I'm not going to say / post something I don't believe in and that I won't stand behind. It's okay if someone doesn't agree with me, but I really resent those that have a screen name and blast away at anyone, anything, anytime.

I have a friend that frequents some of the same boards as I do. I recently introduced her to a site that shows how many posts you have, allows you to give "reps" to others, and is frequented mostly by women connected with a direct sales company. I've been a member for almost a year, and she just a month. She loves this site because she can post her real thoughts and she thinks the company won't know it is her because she uses a screen name. And for being there a month, she has over 3,000 posts compared to me being there a year with approximately 250 posts. On the phone, she will tell her real feelings; on the message board she will post her real thoughts under her screen name, but when it comes to giving positive suggestions to the company we are affiliated with - no way - she is afraid to rock the boat. I don't think that she realizes that she could do better by standing behind her own thoughts and communicating in a positive way with those that have the power to do something. It's not just my friend that does this; it is so many others too.

I will add that when I post, I generally write my post and then read it over. Sometimes, I'll copy and paste it to Word to do a spell check, if I have time. But before I hit send or submit, I make sure I've said what I believe in and am ready to stand behind it.

P.S. I didn't spell check, so forgive me if I made any errors.

P.P.S. Would it be a good idea to add a section here to balance against the number of "rants" and list some "raves" too?
