Voter Apathy
Nov 6th, 2006 by Jeremy
It’s an election day tomorrow. If you didn’t already know that you are either living with your head in the ground or perhaps you need to read on. Do you have an opinion? I can say with some confidence that you do. The problem is that most Americans could care less about showing up to vote for political representatives that will represent what they care about.
Why is this? Likely because most feel like their vote doesn’t count, it won’t make a difference and government will go on doing the same thing no matter what they do. The worst part about this opinion is that most of Americans now feel this way. Voter registrations are pitifully low, a small portion of the population is even registered for the right to show up at the voting locations. Only a small portion of those registered ever even show up.
Guess what, your vote does make a difference, especially at the local level. My city used to have a mayor that didn’t want any businesses in “his” town, so guess what, we missed the chance at getting some big retailers that ended up going to neighboring cities. The result? My city has the second highest property tax in the state. That mayor was given the boot at the last elections and we now have a mayor working hard to try and make up for lost ground.
Take the few hours it takes to research your candidates and go out and vote. It’s not a major undertaking, and you need to do it. What, will that get in the way of some TV time tonight? Boo hoo.
